Gauteng improves maternal health

Simple interventions such as the introduction of Kangaroo mother care, the
promotion of immunisation programmes and school health services
have helped improve child mortality rates in South Africa’s Gauteng province, the
Health MEC Hope Papo said at the start of Reproductive Health Month.

A codeshare agreement between South African Airways and Virgin Australia, one of
Australia’s largest domestic airlines, offers passengers travelling to Perth options to
fly on to other Australian cities, SAA has announced. The agreement also offers
Australian travellers wider choices in Africa.

South Africans to go to the polls on 7 May

South Africa’s national and provincial elections – the fifth general elections since the country attained democracy in 1994 – will take place on Wednesday, 7 May, President Jacob Zuma announced on Friday. “These are historic elections, as they take place during the 20th anniversary of our freedom from apartheid bondage,” he said.

South Africa targets 25-million voters

South Africa’s Independent Electoral Commission will open its 22 263 voting stations this weekend for a final registration drive which it hopes will attract 1.1-million new voters ahead of the country’s 2014 elections. There are currently 24.1-million registered voters, representing 76% of those eligible to vote.
