Diverse culture

Sunday the 3rd of January marked president Jacob Zuma’s fifth wedding. It was followed by a lot of negative comments pertaining to legality and taxpayers’ money.

The practice of polygamy in Zulu culture indicates a man’s social standing, where each of his wives has her own hut and fields. Within Zulu custom it is admissible to have more than one wife, so long as the husband can provide for his family. Both the prospective bride’s and groom’s families agree on the arrangements and terms during lobola (dowry) negotiations.

We have a country rich in diverse cultures, yet we are not educated about how they work. Instead, whenever someone practices what is within their rights, they receive criticism.

How do we educate ourselves on the diverse cultures that surround us?

Cool post, good call about education. Education is everywhere not just in our classrooms. Each person you meet could be an opportunity to learn something new or old. Keep and open mind and the world will be your play ground.
