Romance is all around Cape Town

brideandgroom3 Undoubtedly the most romantic, joyful and exciting day in a couple’s life is their wedding day. Browsing through my neighbour’s virtual wedding album, I was in awe in how they managed to capture their precious moments encapsulating the uniqueness of Cape Town people and culture.

The first photograph to grabs my attention is that with the Adderley Street flower sellers with their colourful blooms at Trafalgar Square. The flower sellers have operated in the Square for the past 100 years and have freshly cut flowers, including our national flower the protea, indigenous flowers and a range flowers depending on the season. The blushing bride and groom were showered with fresh rose petals by the flower sellers. To the couple’s surprise, a group of ladies passing by added a special touch to their joyous moments with traditional African wedding songs and a member popped a R100 into the bride’s dress as a parting gift.

Not far down the Adderley Street, the happy couple went for a romantic stroll down Parliament Avenue. Situated right next to the Company Gardens, where couples traditionally take their wedding photographs, the oak-lined Parliament Avenue provided a breath of fresh air with the occasional curious squirrel.

The couple’s next romantic moment was in Chiappini Street where the groom serenaded the blushing bride with a beautiful song. Chiappini Street is situated in the heart of the Bo-Kaap . The Bo-Kaap a multicultural area, rich in cultural heritage, tucked safely into the fold of signal hill. The cobble stoned streets with its brightly coloured houses from the nineteenth and seventeenth century, is a real charm to discover.

A special thanks to Shivaan and Nuhaa Mathews for sharing their story.  I wish them a life filled with joyfulness, happiness and romance. Photographs by Hassan & Hussein.

About the Author

Fatima Jakoet lives by the motto ‘I love what I do and I do what I love’. Born in Cape Town, she had the joys of a carefree childhood in the Boland town of Wellington. After graduating with a degree in Chemistry, she explored the field of forensic science as a toxicologist and narcotic drug expert. A crime scene investigation exposed this adventurer to an airport tarmac...a scene that changed her life forever - a moment of silence in front of a Boeing 747-400. She packed her bags and ventured Down Under. She graduated at the BAE Systems Flight Training College in Adelaide, Australia two years later, with a Commercial Pilots' license and returned to South Africa to brave the African sky. Today she keeps the South African flag flying high and claims to have the best office at 35000 ft.
