Eternal optimist, the best brand ambassador money can’t buy…
Eternal optimist? I’ve been called worse :), but I am grateful for being the way I am. Sitting in traffic, I use this time to mini dance-a-thon and marvel at the progress I see unveil in front of me. Road work may infuriate most people, but excites me. Have I mentioned how amazing Cape Town International airport is yet? Well it is certainly an architecturally beautiful piece of art.
I often tell everyone I meet how much more one loves this country until you leave and come back. I’ve always been proud of where I am from, but until my first time abroad, then and only then did my true patriotic colors emerged.
Those who have never frequented our beautiful country, cannot imagine until they have been here, the magnificence our borders have to offer. When abroad and I mention that I am from Cape Town, South Africa, and the typical “oh you’re from Africa” line usually follows (not always, sometimes). South Africa and Africa are often used interchangeably as though they are the same, but we know better :).
I must confess, that I have not traveled much locally apart from:
- Port Elizabeth
- East London
- Knysna
- George
- Garden Route
- Durban
- Pietermaritzberg
- Johannesburg
- Pretoria
- Sun City
- Kruger National
- etc.
Each place is special is their own regard and beautiful, although unexpected. When traveling locally, I am always amazed at the new places I find and find it hard to believe that I live here.
So next time you find yourself traveling locally (abroad has become slightly costly), remember that no matter how green the grass is on the other side, the real grass is grown here, often exported to other countries where it is nowhere near as fresh as at the source.
Happy traveling, local is lekker :),

I think that you have written a wonderful article! I am proudly South African too and I love telling people how wonderful our country is. Although there are many beautiful places around the world, I think that South Africa probably has something comparable in almost all cases! Take the splendour of the Cape with Chapmans Peak, Cape Point, Table Mountain and its fantastic winelands (just to name a few!), the Garden Route with its cute towns and spectacular scenery, KwaZulu Natal with its great beaches and fantastic Zulu culture, Mpumalanga and the game regions and Kruger Park with its wonderful scenery and the Big Five…. just too much to mention….
South Africa truly has something for everyone!
